Interplay of Fe and S biogeochemistry shapes in situ iron mineral transformations in contrasting intertidal sediments
A new article, published in Environmental Science: Processes and Impacts, presents fascinating results collected during a field study in the German Wadden Sea, demonstrating the effect of sulfide on Fe mineral transformations in coastal sediments.
Carbon dioxide release driven by organic carbon in minerogenic salt marshes
A new publication in EGUsphere takes a deeper look at carbon dynamics in minerogenic salt marshes, with field work undertaken in the German Wadden Sea. The work was a collaboration with the University of Tübingen, which was undertaken as part of the ERC “Iron Minerals Dynamics in Soils and Sediments” project.
Katrin Schiedung accepts major award
Katrin Schiedung has been awarded the Fritz-Scheffer-Award by the German Soil Science Society in recognition of her excellent doctoral thesis
Tracing iron’s invisible transformations just beneath our feet
The ERC “Iron Mineral Dynamics in Soils and Sediments” project, which ran in the Soil Chemistry group from 2018 – 2024, produced major advances in iron biogeochemical research, and could influence research methods in research disciplines beyond soil science. We offer some perspectives on the outcomes of the project in this contribution for the American Geophysical Union’s Eos magazine.
Oliver Fuhrer and Thomas Hofstetter are new Adjunct Professors at D-USYS
At the request of ETH President Joël Mesot, the ETH Board awarded the title of professor to Oliver Fuhrer and Thomas Hofstetter at its meeting on May 21 and 22, 2025. Congratulations!
Welcome Marjana
Marjana Yeasmin has joined us in the Soil Chemistry group for the next month from RMIT University, Melbourne.
Short film selected for Spotlight on Academics Film Festival
Our short film about the ERC IRMIDYN project has been selected to be shown at the Spotlight on Academics Science Film Festival 2025. The showing will happen on site and online on Saturday the 8th of March.
New article shows that phosphorus adsorbed to ferrihydrite triggers vivianite formation in intertidal sediments
The new article, published in Environmental Science & Technology, follows the transformation of ferrihydrite, with and without P absorption, within reduced intertidal sediments.
"Good leadership begins with an inspiring vision that provides orientation"
Dr. Olga Schubert and Prof. Martin Ackermann, co-leaders of the Microbial Systems Ecology group at the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics, have been honoured with the ALEA Award. This accolade recognises their exemplary leadership and significant contributions to fostering an inclusive and innovative research environment at ETH Zurich and Eawag.
Joëlle Kubeneck awarded the ETH Medal
Congratulations to Joëlle Kubeneck, who has been awarded the ETH Medal in recognition of her doctoral thesis work.
